"Through this incense, I hope you can feel the natural scent of cedar in the watermill and the state of the mountain village where I live."

Baba Suishaba is a watermill in Yame city, Fukuoka, a region of Japan once home to more than forty. The 100-year-old watermill is operated by husband and wife team Baba and Chieko, who do everything from gathering fresh branches of cedar, to grinding and refining cedar leaves to powder, to packaging the incense itself. This region's dwindling, centuries-old technique produces a clean-burning, fragrant incense reminiscent of those same cedar tree forests.

"A watermill makes a squeaking noise and turns vigorously, and the pestle only makes a loud noise as it squeezes the cedar powder without rest. This is a workplace where you are surrounded by the pleasant scent of cedar."
