Recommended Spots: Old City

Recommended Spots: Old City

In October 2021 we released our first Recommended Short Trips guide. Ever since then, we've kept at it. It's a running list of some of our favorite places to shop, cafe pit stop, and people watch, with three different walking routes all a leisurely walking distance from our shop.

Old City, once known as Olde City, is indeed the oldest part of Philadelphia. On a warm day in May, we took a stroll through its well-traveled streets, to soak up the springtime sun and appreciate the bricks and cobblestones, parks and alleyways of this always-changing riverside neighborhood.

Just the place to wander idly, and find yourself in good company on the piers.

A heads out from the OMOI storefront with a shopping bag in hand, on their way to explore the area.
A holds open a copy of our Recommended Short Trips guide.
M walks up a narrow cobblestone street lined with red brick buildings.
Just a block north of our store, the well known Paradigm gallery beckons visitors.
A & J walk up Arch street near the Betsy Ross House. Our view is from across the street of them. They pass historical buildings of various architectural styles.
Looking up at the tops of red brick buildings with their arched windows.
A red GO PHILS sticker outside of a storefront. We only see the lower half of the doors and the old marble slab that is the step into the building.
A & J stand outside of red brick facade of Riverwards Produce checking their Short Trips Guide for the next destination to head to.
A walks inside Riverwards Produce. The shot has some motion blur and is a little vibey.
We see J from behind as they survey the drink selection at Riverwards Produce.
J & A make their way out of Riverwards Produce with drinks to perk up their travels. The background of the store has shelves full of interesting looking pantry and grocery items.
A holds a special "earth day smoothie" from Riverwards Produce. It's chartreuse green with blue and darker green stripes squiggling down the sides.
Strong sunlight defines a red brick building corner, where someone has set a trio of fashionable stone planters full of matching flowers.
M walks down a cobblestone street looking over their shoulder.
Two little dogs on leashes poke out from around the corner, their owner obscured by the building.
A view of wrought iron work and smooth masonry work in strong sunlight on one of the many old buildings in the neighborhood.
A view from across the corner of the long-standing iconic MR BAR STOOL at 2nd and Arch streets.
Photographer M takes a self portrait by shooting their reflection in a window.
A rack of rentable bikes sits near wayfinding signage for the area. In big letters it says RIVER >> with smaller titles for Race St Pier, Waterfront, Old City, Liberty Bell, Chinatown
Looking at some street art stickers plastered on old ship ties on the pedestrian walkway to the piers. One sticker says DO NOT OBEY IN ADVANCE.
A & J chat as they walk towards the pier. We see them in full view from behind. Other people trail ahead of them.
M is on their phone looking around while standing in front of a pedestrian map near the river.
M sits on a bench on the pier reading as J appears. They are both smiling.
Across from Race St Pier, an old warehouse building painted white and streaked with rust and colorful graffiti tags.
A walks up to J sitting with M on the pier, smiling. J waves. It's nice and sunny out.
A & J catch up while sitting down on the pier. A cloudless blue sky and the bridge stretches out behind them.
People hang out on the wide steps of Race St Pier, the Ben Franklin Bridge stands tall just behind them.
A view of the Delaware River. Other piers and bridges are in the distance. Nearby, we see 2 people looking out from another pier.
A points a Lomography camera at the viewer as they lean against the guardrail of the pier. A cloudless blue sky is above, with darker blue-green river water below.
A sticker that says WALK AROUND PHILADELPHIA is pasted on a light pole. Above it is a reflective sign with crossing instructions.
An older gentleman makes his way down to Race St Pier. He looks cozy in scale in comparison to the large bridge infrastructure rising up behind him.
A new building on the corner of 2nd and Arch, with glossy reflective glass panels and windows. There is a section of the building cut out, a greenspace that we can only see by its reflection on the ceiling.
A shadowed and out of focus view of FRONT st road sign, set against a background of a tall red brick wall covered in ivy.
A cobblestone residential street where someone has decorated with planters full of hostas, container trees and shrubs, and a wrought iron pair of chairs and table.
Many old and narrow alleyways are tucked between the newer larger streets of Old City. Residential homes have interesting ways to decorate their window,s this one lined with different PEZ dispensers.
The famous, historic Elfreth's Alley with curious visitors ambling down it's cobblestones.
A closeup view of our Short Trips guide. Hands are pointing at places to go.
