This collection, called SIWA, is produced by the Onao paper company in Japan and designed by superstar industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa. The remarkable aspect is the Naoron paper itself, invented by Onao, which doesn’t rip, is highly water-resistant and can carry heavy loads (tested for up to 22lbs/10 kgs).
Onao is a family run company, with more than 150 years of papermaking history in beautiful Yamanishi, a rural area near Mt. Fuji.
It's the perfect size to use as a sub-bag for work, and this tote bag has more storage capacity than its small appearance suggests. It was made with a new type of washi paper, Hard Naoron.
Eco-friendly "hard Naoron" has a paper texture (increases with use) and includes polyester fibers from recycled plastic bottles and textile products. Durable as well as highly water and tear resistant.
The easy-to-hold handle can be worn over the shoulder even when the bag is heavy with a lot of luggage. To ensure durability, the handle extends from the bottom and is neatly sewn to the main body. The bottom is 6in/15 cm wide. The opening of the bag is piped to increase durability. The pocket for storing your wallet or smartphone can also be used as an inner pocket by turning the main body over.
The bottom has a wide gusset, so it can stand on its own. The bottom is equipped with a bottom plate, so it has the advantage of a tote bag that can hold a lot of things securely and is easy to organize.
Each bag is completed by a craftsman sewing it one by one with a sewing machine. The double layered construction with inconspicuous seams and bag stitching increases its strength. Great for walks, shopping, and work. It matches a variety of outfits and fashions, and the texture improves with use.
